In Isaiah 44, God exposes the foolishness of idolatry. He describes a craftsman who cuts down a tree—even a cypress—and carves an idol, bows before it, and worships it.
"He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak... yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it."
—Isaiah 44:14-15
The tree itself was never the problem. God created trees for our enjoyment and benefit. The problem came when man gave God's creation the worship that belongs only to God.
That same danger still exists today. People may idolize beautiful landscapes, expensive homes, careers, possessions, hobbies, or even other people. Even a flower bed at a church can become something we admire more than the God who created it. Anything that captures our hearts more than the Lord has become an idol.
The Cream Ball False Cypress is beautiful, but like every tree and flower, it is temporary. In time it will age, storms may damage it, insects may attack it, disease may weaken it, and one day this present creation itself will pass away.
God reminds us:
"The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever."
—Isaiah 40:8
Peter repeated the same truth:
"But the word of the Lord endureth for ever."
—1 Peter 1:25
Jesus declared:
"Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away."
—Matthew 24:35
Enjoy the beauty of God's creation, but never worship the gift instead of the Giver. Trees, flowers, and even the earth itself are temporary, but God's Word will endure forever.
