John 1:48-50
The fig tree is mentioned many times throughout the Bible. It was a familiar sight in Israel, providing fruit, shade, and a quiet place to rest or meditate. One of the most personal references is found when Jesus called Nathanael to be His disciple.
Nathanael was surprised when Jesus said,
"Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee."
—John 1:48
No one else had mentioned Nathanael being under the fig tree, yet Jesus knew exactly where he had been. This wasn't simply about seeing a man sitting beneath a tree—it revealed that Jesus knew Nathanael personally before they had ever met.
The same is true for each of us. God knows where we have been, what we have experienced, and even the thoughts of our hearts. Nothing in our lives is hidden from Him.
David wrote,
"O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me... Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways."
—Psalm 139:1-3
For the believer, this is not a frightening truth—it is a comforting one. The Savior who knows everything about us still calls us to follow Him. He knows our failures, our fears, our struggles, and our victories, yet His invitation remains the same.
As you look at this Chicago Hardy Fig, remember Nathanael beneath the fig tree. Before he ever sought Jesus, Jesus already knew him. Before you ever called upon Christ, He knew you. He sees you today, knows your needs, and invites you to walk with Him.
